Teaching procedures

Step I Warming Up

The teacher have a brief introduction of the film “Titanic”, using some pictures and the background music “My heart will go on”. And then , the teacher says: Today, we’ll learn some other things from this movie.

The subjunctive mood is used when we want to express a wish, request, recommendation or report of a command. Also the subjunctive mood is mainly used in if clause, and we can use it to refer to an unreal present condition, an imaginary last action and an imaginary future situation.

Step II Presentation

This class, we’ll follow the three situations one by one to learn the subjunctive mood with the help of Jack and Rose.

Act One An unreal present condition ---- before board

First of all, the students give their performances, that is, Jack thought to himself before he was on board and how he won the ticket.

After that, the teacher will make a conclusion of the usages in if clause when it refers to an unreal present condition:

if 从句主句presentdid(were)would/could/should/might do

Act Two An imaginary past action ---- meet and fall in love

Next, the students give their performances, that is, Jack met Rose on Titanic and they got to know each other and fell in love. The students show the typical actions to the whole class.

After that, the teacher will make a conclusion of the usages in if clause when it refers to an imaginary past action:

if 从句主句lasthad donewould have doneAct Three An imaginary future situation ---- dead and alive

In the end, students give their performances about the last act, that is, the ship suddenly hit an iceberg and it sank. Before Jack died, he encouraged Rose not to give up living and finally Rose was saved by the returned boat.

After that, the teacher will make a conclusion of the usages in if clause when it refers to an imaginary future situation:
