Task 1: sum up the use of object clauses with that
Present the four sentences in the box on Page 68, and let the students read them together. And then tell them the clauses underlined are object clauses.
Let the students go through the passage in Unit 1 and give me more sentences with the object clause.
Let the students go through the passage in Unit 2 and find more sentences which contain object clauses
Let students sum up the use of object clauses
Tell the students the three key points of object clauses : guide word, word order, and tense.
Explain the three key points of the object clause one by one.
① Guide word
Tell the students that there are many guide words in object clauses. And we can divide them into three parts: that; whether/if; wh- words. But in this module, we only focus on the guide word “that”, and we call the object clause object clauses with that.
Then I tell my students that we usually leave out the guide word”that” in spoken English.
Also I let the students think over the question: Which words can be followed by object clauses with that? Let them give some examples. Then divide the words into two parts. The first part is some verbs, such as think, believe, say, know, here, see, hope and so on. The second part is some adjectives, such as afraid, glad, sure, sorry, happy and so on.
② Word order
Tell the students the word order of object clauses with that is : that + subject+ object + other parts.
Make examples to make my explanation heard clearly .
③ Tense
When the main verb is a present tense, the verb tense in the object clause can be different in different situations. When the main verb is a past tense, the verb tense in the object clause is past too. However, if the object clause is a truth, the verb tense in the object clause is present.
Task 2: Review the key words and phrases in the module with the help of pictures.
Present a picture of Dashu Mountain in Hefei. Ask the students
①” Where is it” Where do you think it is?” “Is it in the city center?” Let the students answer with the phrase” I think or I don’t think”.
②”How large is it?” “ How large do you think it is?” Let the students answer the question with the phrase” I know or I don’t know”.
Play a video and let the students enjoy the beautiful sights of Dashu Mountain. Meanwhile, let the students think over the questions: What can people see and do here?
Present some pictures and let the students make sentences with “I think” or” I’m sure”
Present some pictures and let the students make sentences with “ The guide told us”.
In this way, students learn to use the object clause with that and the key words and phrases correctly
Task 3: Do a simple writing.
1. Let’s be guides
Tell the students Dashu Mountain is very beautiful and very important in our city and ask them : Do you want to let more people to enjoy it? Do you want more people to protect it? Then let the students be guides and write an introduction to Dashu Mountain with the given information and object clauses with that
Share their introduction.
Homework: 1. Polish your writing.
