Teaching key and difficult points:

(1) enable students to grasp key expressions related to outdoor activities and outdoor fun;

(2) help them combine their previous knowledge and what they have learnt in this lesson to better describe, compare and plan how to have outdoor fun in different situations.

Teaching concepts

According to the New Curriculum Standards, developing students’ language skills, language knowledge, cultural awareness, emotional attitudes and learning strategies have significant meanings for students’ long-term development.

So this lesson plan takes the above into consideration when designing. Through the lesson, students will not only improve their language competence, especially their language skills and language knowledge, but also cultural knowledge as well as their confidence and motivation towards the target language. Meanwhile, it can also help develop their individual personalities to some extent, which are the core of the New Curriculum Standard.

Teaching methods:

The ESA (engage, study & activate) model raised by Jeremy Harmer is applied throughout the whole lesson plan. Meanwhile, Situational approach and cooperative learning are adopted here.

Situational Approach: when designing activities, creating a meaningful and useful situation for students can not only raise students’ motivation and interest, but also activate their previous knowledge and put what they have learnt into real use.

Cooperative Learning: through group works, students can build team spirit, learn to share different ideas and opinions with each other, help each other and improve together.

Teaching Procedures (45min): (Minutes=min; Teacher=T; Students=Ss)

Engage

(2min) T shows some pictures of students’ class trip to Shanghai Happy Valley last month and asks:

(1) Do you know where it is?

(2) Did you have fun there?

(This step is to lower Ss’ learning anxiety through things that they are familiar with. Also, it can help improve Ss’ interest and motivation towards the topic.)

Study

2. (3min) T goes on to ask:

(1) What do you think of your outdoor trip?

(2) What other outdoor activities do you know?

T guides Ss to answer the two questions using adjectives (e.g. amazing, interesting, cool, wonderful etc.) that they have learnt in Unit 5 and key words (e.g. camping, riding, cycling, jogging etc.) in this lesson to describe their feelings and outdoor activities.

(This step is to activate Ss’ previous knowledge and guide them to pay attention to new & key words in this lesson)

(3min) Ss are asked to finish A on p69: matching pictures with suitable activities. T checks answers and then asks:

which outdoor activity would you like to try? Why?

(T guides Ss to put those newly-learnt words into direct use and make a natural transition to the next step.)

(2min) Listen & Answer: Daniel and Amy are also talking about outdoor activities. Listen to their conversation and answer the following questions:

What outdoor activity would Amy like to try?

What about Daniel?

(This step is to improve Ss’ listening skills and help them get familiar with the target conversation.)

(2min) Scanning to answer:
