The use of modal verb can in Yes/No questions and short answers.

Can you …? Yes, I can. /No, I can’t.

Sentence patterns to talk about hobbies and activities:

What club do you want to join? I want to join the... club.

Can you…? Yes… / No…

Teaching difficulties:

The expressions of some activities and clubs:

play the guitar, play chess;

chess club, English club, swimming club…

Encourage students to talk about hobbies and activities in English.

Teaching Methods and Aids:

The topic of this unit is to talk about students’ hobbies and abilities, which is close to their daily life, thus students can actively join in this lesson and express their ideas naturally. In this lesson, the teacher consciously lead students to take part in each teaching section and create a natural language environment by adopting a combination of communicative approach, situation approach and Task-based teaching.

Multimedia device will be used where necessary in this lesson.

Teaching Steps:

Step 1 Lead in:

Activity 1:

After greeting, show Ss a guitar and then say: “What is this in my hand? Yes, it’s a guitar. Do you think I can play it?”

Then play the guitar and sing the English song You Are My Sunshine.

Activity 2:

Say to Ss: “Now, you see I can play the guitar. Can you play it? Can you play the guitar?”

Then the teacher shows the title of this unit on the blackboard and says “Today we are going to learn Unit 4 Can you play the guitar? Learn to ask about abilities and hobbies.”
