T: Good morning everyone!?Today our topic is direct speech and reported speech, grammar and usage of unit 1. Let’s look at this picture. Tom, Lily and Mary are having a conversation. What are they talking about?
Let’s read the dialogue among them aloud together.
Great ! You’ve done a good job. Now look at these two sentences.
“I have been writing a book on the history of China. ”
Tom said that he had been writing a book on the history of China.
Try to translate the sentences into Chinese. Have you noticed the differences between these two sentences?
You can discuss with your partner, 2 minutes for you and now it’s your turn!

T: Time is up! Student A, Please translate the sentences into Chinese.
Student B, Have you noticed the differences between these two sentences?
T : Good job! Yes. One is direct speech and the other is reported speech.
Direct speech is used to report what exactly has been said and the words usually
appear in quotation marks. Reported speech is used to report the meaning of
what has been said without using the exact words and quotation marks.
T: Thinking: If we have to report what others have said, how can we change the direct speech into reported speech?

T: Now let’s look at some statements, read them aloud and summarize the rules of changing the direct speech into reported speech. I will give each group chances to summarize the rules in turn. Let’s see which group can find out the most rules.
1. Tom said: ‘I have been writing a book on the history of China. ’
Tom said that he had been writing a book on the history of China.
2. The teacher said: ‘Don’t worry about your exam. ’
The teacher told us not to worry about our exam.
