I. Learning aims:

1.To have a good understanding of the life of the disabled and their optimistic attitude towards life.

2.To get to know the inner demands of the disabled and develop the consciousness of helping the disadvantaged groups.

3.To cultivate a good reading habit and to be positive and strong-minded when in trouble.

II. Teaching important and difficult points:

1.How to get students to learn to use reading strategies such as skimming and scanning to read flexibly.

2. How to heighten students’ awareness of helping the disabled.

3. How to encourage students to communicate and cooperate with each other.

V. Teaching procedures:

Step I Warming up

To get students mentally prepared for the new lesson.

Step II Pre-reading

Show some pictures and enjoy a video to watch the story of Nick.

Q: What do you think of him?

Purpose: From the pictures, Nick doesn’t look any different from healthy people. However, after watching the video, we know Nick is disabled without arms and legs. Although he suffers a lot, he holds a positive attitude towards life. Ask students to tell about Nick’s story to attract students’ attention and arouse their interest in reading.

Step Ⅲ Reading comprehension

Task1:Fast reading

Skim the text to match the main idea of each paragraph.
