Analysis of the students:

Grade nine students have some basic skills about listening, speaking, reading and writing and they are active and creative. What’s more, they really want to show themselves in class, but they are afraid of making mistakes before their teachers and classmates. So I give them chances to show themselves and encourage them to speak out loudly. Therefore students are brave enough to share their opinions and have confidence in English class.

Teaching Methods:

reading, listening, group-work and task-based teaching

Teaching Procedures:

Step I .Warm-up:

Play a song and ask students to follow. Then answer a question: Are you happy?

Step II .Lead-in:

Show students a picture and ask a question:

What makes you happy?

Step III. Reading tasks:

1. Skimming:

How many characters are there in the story?

2. Scanning:

1). What’s wrong with the king?

2). Can medicine help the king? Why or why not?

3). Why does power not make the prime minister happy?

4). Why does money not make the banker happy?

5). Why does fame not make the singer happy?

Step IV. After reading:

Guessing the possible ending of the story.

Role-play the story in groups.

Step V. Feedback:

Who is the best actor?

Who is the best actress?
