Students are expected to understand the new knowledge through the mental process of seeing, hearing, saying, observing, thinking etc. And make preparation for completing the new study task. Students get the knowledge actively by probe study and cooperative study.

V Teaching procedures

Step 1 Lead-in:

A guessing game is provided to revise words about jobs. Parts of pictures about jobs are given to let the Students guess the job. In this way, students’ background information and interest are aroused.

Step 2 Jobs in our neighbourhood

Walk around our neighbourhood

A real scene is created by a map of SIP, Suzhou. With the help of the map, students can learn jobs and places in our real neighbourhod. At the same time, a route to Wendy’s home is drawn. And I will invite students to visit Wendy. Students will be very excited because I will ask them to play games with Wendy.

Finding game

The game is designed to see if students master the new expressions in the above part. Let’s see how the game is played by a video.

(From the video, we find that students learn the new expressions very well.)

Matching game

The second game is matching game. Students need to match places with jobs with the help of sentence patterns.

(Students are required to use the expressions to communicate in groups. They are encouraged to say sentences instead of words.)

Step 3 Jobs in the future

Wendy’s family members’ jobs

A listening task is given to improve students’ listening ability. The material is about Wendy’s family members’ jobs. Students need to find out their jobs and working places after listening to their talk.

(Before listening, a tip about listening for key words is mentioned. In order to practice students’ ability of using sentences to express ideas, some sentences patterns are listed.)

Wendy’s friends’ future jobs

Students will listen to a talk about Wendy’s friends’ future jobs. Before listening to the recording, students need to keep two questions in mind:

1. What is Daniel going to be in the future? Why?

2. What is Sandy going to be in the future? Why?

Step 4 The best jobs in the world

Enjoy a video:

After the talk, the input information is enough; students will talk about their dream jobs. A video about the best jobs in the world is provided to give them some interesting ideas. Students will discuss about the best jobs in the world using what have learnt.

Have a discussion

Students discuss about the best jobs in the world in groups of six. In my class, after the discussion, my students shared with me that the best jobs are the king, queen, and boss. Then I show pictures of cleaner, solider, worker and asked them whether these are the best jobs. They all said no. then three questions are asked:

1. Without soldiers, who will protect our country?

2. Without cleaners, who will keep our city clean?

3. Without workers, who will make our city more beautiful?

After the three questions, I think they may have a different idea for the best job in the world. They realized that every job is important and all the jobs are all the best.
