Teaching strategies

Task---driven method, cooperation, evaluation are used in the organization of class in order to stimulate students’ learning passion.

Teaching objects

The knowledge objects

Students should be able to master around the world, make a wish, blow out, in one go, get popular, come true, cut up, a symbol of , bring good luck to correctly and understand if-clause exactly in the context.

The ability objects

Students should develop the ability of fast reading and intensive reading. They also need to learn how to predict the content by title and picture , look for information and make use of information according to the context, and choose the proper meaning of key words in the context.

The moral objects

Students are supposed to understand that cultures are different in different countries or areas, meanwhile , they should learn to respect other cultures.

Teaching process

Before reading

1. Lead in Play a short video and ask students two questions to lead in the topic ”birthday”.

2. Brainstorm List related things about birthday.

3. Discussion Discuss two pictures of Jimmy’s birthday to lead in the birthday food around the world.

While reading

1. Fast reading

Task One: Find the main idea and complete the sentence.

Task Two: Scan the passage and find 2 countries and 3 foods in 30 seconds.

2. Careful reading

In this part, I design five reading tasks.

Read Paragraph 2 and finish three tasks: match, translate and fill in the blanks. Students should get the ability of looking for certain information as well as making use of the context. The task of translating aims to help students make clear that while doing translation, we should choose the most proper meaning of the key words according to the context.

Read Paragraph 2&3 and finish one task: compare the birthday foods and their special meanings between UK and China, then complete the chart. Students are supposed to attain the ability of looking for and comparing information.

Add a supplementary reading material. The purpose is to increase the amount of information.

Read the whole passage and answer four questions. It aims to help students have a deeper understanding of the main idea and some details.

After reading

Ask the students to have a group work: compare the birthday foods of different countries and point out their special meanings, make a report and share it in class. Encourage them to report more countries that they learn about. It aims to help the students to build a new schema in their mind.

Homework: write down the repot.
