The analysis of teaching material

This is the sixth teaching period of this unit. This is the expansion of the topic of the text. The emphasis of this period should be laid on listening, speaking and writing. Listening is a conversation about chemical farming. The purpose of this conversation is to illustrate the ways in which overusing chemical fertilizers affects our lives directly. Through listening and exercises the students learn how to get the main idea of a conversation and learn some useful expressions about chemical farming. They also know the necessity of being smart in our food shopping and eating, being aware of the possible dangers and avoiding them. Speaking is an example of an integrated task. It encourages the students to think about the advantages of “green food”. It helps the students to develop an argument to try to persuade others that their ideas are correct. All of these lay the foundation for the next task—writing. In this way, the students feel that they have information to put out. And writing makes for the improvement of the students’ writing ability. It gives the students practice in persuasive writing and it involves group work. To make the poster more attractive to readers, the teacher should encourage students to choose their words carefully and design their poster when possible.

Besides, most of the students can express their own opinions in English clearly. In addition, the students have already leaned something about chemical faming and organic farming from the reading passages, so they are familiar with the topic and know some words related to the topic. However, their words are still limited so that they may have some difficulties in speaking and writing.
