Teaching Plan

§1. Introduction of Design ideas and guiding foundations

Based on Bloom’s Taxonomy, the Core Competence of English subject, and the New Curriculum Standards, by means of Situational Language Teaching, Contextual Grammar Teaching and Interactive Teaching and Learning Approach, I plan to design this grammar lesson as follows.

Firstly, present attributive clauses in real language situation — self-introduction, to help students to have a basic knowledge of attributive clauses and simply imitate to use.

Secondly, set up more practical situations in the form of discourses describing things, people, places, time and reasons in their school life, in order to make students understand and comprehend the usage better, which can consolidate the knowledge of attributive clauses.

Practice makes perfect. So the third is to drill in pragmatic dimension. To prepare for that, I will guide students to make a summary on the usage of relative pronouns and relative adverbs by themselves to produce the useful sentence patterns of attributive clauses. With the help of the sentence patterns, they are supposed to apply attributive clauses to describe all kinds of things, people, places, time and reasons so as to finish the guessing competition in groups – Mind Acts upon Mind and a small discussion in pairs.

According to Bloom’s Taxonomy Theory, synthesis is a higher level for students to achieve. So lastly, I design to guide students to rewrite and polish up their self-introductions using more attributive clauses and produce a textual output, which not only integrate the target language, but also practice their writing skill. Meanwhile, it is also a kind of evaluation on whether they really master the attributive clauses.

§2. Analysis of teaching background

(1) Analysis of the teaching material

The teaching material of this lesson is from Unit 1, Book 1 of Advance with English published by Yilin Publishing House, whose theme is school life. This type of this lesson is Grammar and usage, which deals with the basic knowledge of attributive clauses, like what an attributive clause is and what relative pronouns and relative adverbs function as in this clause. As students have talked about the theme of school life in Welcome to the unit, learnt some words and phrases related to school facilities in Word power and adapted to the senior high school life better, I will combine grammar teaching with topic discussion by setting up situations related to their daily school life to inspire students to understand and use attributive clauses to describe things, people, places, time and reasons based on the theme of my school life. They are expected to conclude the usage of relative pronouns (that, which, who, whom, whose) and relative adverbs (where, when, why) in attributive clauses, and summarize some useful sentence patterns by themselves at the end of lesson. And they are supposed to put the knowledge into practice in their daily study and life.

(2) Analysis of the students

My target students are freshmen in high school, who are familiar with and interested in the topic of school life. Also they are active and creative. However, they are at the novice level of English grammar and at different levels of proficiency in speaking. So in class, the most important thing is to set up real and vivid situations for them to understand the usage of attributive clauses intuitively, so as to enable them master attributive clauses effectively, develop their interest in grammar learning, and encourage them to speak English actively and confidently.

§3. Analysis of the teaching objectives

Based on the Core Competence of English subject, I think, having learnt this lesson, students are expected to ——

(1) Language capability

① Understand what an attributive clause is.

② Properly use relative pronouns (that, which, who, whom, whose) and relative adverbs (where, when, why) in attributive clauses.

(2) Learning capability

① Learn in order to meet practical needs: describe things, people, places, time and reasons using what they will have learnt in this lesson.

② Learn by doing: improve mastery of attributive clauses by drill.

(3) Thinking ability

① Guess out the riddles with the help of attributive clauses.

② Enhance thinking ability by interactive speaking and writing.
