Teaching aims:

After learning, the students will be able to

1. know the definition of an attri butive clause and identify it;

2. have a general idea of the usage of relative pronouns like which, that, who, whom and whose;

3. develop an interest in grammar learning.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Lead- in

Have Ss read some phrases (an enjoyable experience, best friends, the rules of the school) and point out the noun, the adjective or the prepositional phrase in each of them. And then introduce Ss to an attributive clause: an actor whose name is Chen Weiting.

Step 2 The definition of an attributive clause and some relevant terms

An attributive clause is used to modify a noun/pronoun and is usually put after the noun/pronoun;

The noun/pronoun which an attributive clause modifies is called an antecedent;

Relative words include relative pronouns like which, that, who, whom and whose, and relative adverbs like where, why and when. Both are used to introduce attributive clauses.

List some attributive clauses from Reading to help Ss consolidate the above terms, introducing the three functions of relative pronouns.

Step 3 The three functions of relative pronouns

Make sure Ss are able to identify the functions of relative pronouns: subject, object, predicative, attribute etc..

Step 4 Consolidation

Ask Ss to confirm attributive clauses, pointing out the fuctions of relative pronouns.

Guide Ss to finish the task on Page 9 of the textbook.

Step 5 Homework

Finish A on Page 11
