individual work

Students read to understand the details of the article. While the students do the exercises, the teacher can find out if the students have any difficulties in understanding the material.Step 4 Reading Strategies:

Dealing with cultural references

Say: You may find newspaper reports difficult to understand. There are a lot of words starting with capital letters. For example Leeds University, Pulp Fiction. Don't worry. These words are related to British or American culture. We can use the context to guess what they mean. It is enough for us to just know what they refer to. Leeds University is a university. Pulp Fiction is the name of a film.

1. Ask the students to work in groups and find all the names and find out what they represent. Then sum up and do Ex 5 on Page 291. Students scan and find out.

By working in groups, students may relax a little and find the scanning a bit interesting.Step 5 Post reading: Compound Adjectives

1. Ask the students to do Ex 7 on Page 29 first and then Ex 8.

Notice: words after numbers are singular.1. Do Ex 7 with the class.

2. Do Ex8 first alone and then check in groups.Just practice using compound adjectives.Step 6 Writing and SpeakingThere have been a lot of events in our school recently, such as the basket ball match, the volleyball match, the English play contest and the classic reading contest. Our class did well in the events. Let's write a report for one of them.

Give an example first and then ask the students to write.Students write a short report about an event.Practice writing news stories, which should include major information: what, who, when, where, why, etc.HomeworkP72 Ex1-4
