I. Warming up1. Show a student’s composition with the structure “it is universally acknowledged that…”

2. Ask Ss whether they know the structure is used in the first sentence of a very famous novel.

To arouse Ss’ interest and introduce the topic: pride and prejudice.

II. Lead-in

Show some pictures from the movie Pride and Prejudice.To get Ss to have a general impression of the novel.III. Listening1. Have Ss listen to the recording for the first time and answer two questions:

Q1: Who is the author of Pride and Prejudice?

Q2: What characters are mentioned?

2. Have Ss listen to the recording for the second time and do exercise 2 on P46.

3. Have Ss listen to the recording for the third time and pay attention to the information they just heard with the lyric shown on the screen.

To get Ss to have a general understanding of the outline of Pride and Prejudice.

To get Ss to get more information about the novel.

To help Ss to consolidate the information they heard and deepen their impression of some words and expressions.

IV. Reading1. Ask Ss to read the excerpt of the novel on P47 and answer two questions:

Q1: Why did Elizabeth refuse Mr. Darcy?

Q2: Why was Mr. Darcy sure that she would accept him?

2. Ask Ss to find two sentences in the first two paragraphs that show Darcy’s pride and two sentences in Para 3 and 4 that show Elizabeth’s prejudice.
